Making an “I Spy” Sensory Bottle

I spy something pink….. I spy something round…. What do you spy?  We are all in search for a creative and engaging activity to do with our children this summer. Making your own “I Spy” sensory bottles, is a fun activity that can help your child continue working on their therapeutic skills. It’s also easy and a great way to use items you already have at home. This activity will take less than 5 minutes to make, and can keep your children entertained during car rides or during play time. And in the process, your child will be working on visual motor skills, descriptive language, turn taking, and sensory integration.

Needed Items:

In order to create your own “I Spy” sensory bottle you will need:

  • A clear container, such as an empty plastic bottle
  • Small items you can find at home such as: pom poms, legos, googly eyes, beads, buttons, clothespins, gems, toys
  • Rice
  • Funnel
  • Hot glue gun

To find out how you can make your very own “I Spy” sensory bottle with your kids by watching the video below:

You can use this activity to work on therapy goals by using questions/prompts like:

“How many items can you find that are rectangular?”

“Tell me what texture that button looks like.”

“I spy a lego, what color is it?”

“What do you spy?”

To make it easy, create a list of different questions you can ask ahead of time. Once your child masters that, you can use a timer to create a game between two children, to see who can spot the most items in a certain amount of time.
