July is National Ice Cream Month!

July is National Ice Cream Month, and we can’t think of a better way to celebrate summer than to make a sweet treat with your child! Recipes are a great way to work on speech and language goals, including receptive and expressive language, sequencing items, and reading. (You can also work in some fine motor practice too!) Check out the ingredient list and recipe below:

Ingredients/ Supplies:

  • Measuring Cup
  • 2 Gallon-sized Ziploc Bags
  • 1 cup Half and Half
  • 2 tbsp. Sugar
  • 1 tsp. Vanilla Extract
  • 3 cups of ice
  • 1/3 cup of salt
  • Toppings of your choice

Directions:

In a gallon sized ziploc bag combine the following ingredients: Half and Half, Sugar, Vanilla Extract. In a separate gallon sized bag place ice and salt. Put the first bag inside of the second bag and shake for 7-10 minutes. Decorate finished ice cream, and enjoy!

Don’t forget to use this opportunity to work on some speech and language goals. Ideas for practice include:

  • Talking about the smell, taste and texture of the ice cream
  • Reviewing the recipe and determining what comes first, next, and last
  • Asking your child questions about the recipe to check for their understanding
  • Talking about descriptive words like hot vs. cold
  • Making a recipe book with your child
  • Making a video of your child completing this recipe and posting it to the Project Play Therapy social media accounts (see below)

To introduce your child to this fun activity, you can also show them the video below:
